1. Aptitude, Reasoning, Personality development & English compulsorily needed for Placements and Jobs:
Each year engineering course have 10 subjects or more. We go through Theory, Practical, Viva, Lab works, External, Internal, Majors, Minors, assignment, project, thesis etc. We learn engineering with industrial training, industrial visits, workshops, learning different software.
But at the time of placement, everyone wants Aptitude, Personality development, English speaking.
Every job vacancy exams from technical (GATE, SSC, IES, State Govt. Jobs like state electricity board exams etc. ) to non-technical exams (SSC CGL, Banks etc) focus on Aptitude, Reasoning, English, GK during written exams and personality developments in interviews.
So, these aspects cannot be neglected, if we need to place the students in any job. These learning cannot take place at once, but need a period of time to learn so that we can build up confidence in it.
An engineering institute can ask teachers to at least guide for one hour in a week or more if possible. Because the target is job prospective (career) and if that is achieved, then that can be good for institute.
2. Engineering an option for most students and not the goal. Free marks offered in form of sessional, practicals, internal becomes sweet poison for student's career.
Many students take engineering because its an option for graduation (like B.Sc., B.A., B.Com, B.C.A.). Since engineering sounds good in listening, therefore students or parents choose engineering.
Engineering has become simpler to pass and build up good percentage. Let's take an example of any semester of RTU Exam. The theory papers are of 480 marks and rest 520 marks are in the hand of faculty.
Take an example, if in theory a student gets only 50% marks which scores to 240 marks. But out of the rest marks given by teachers, he is given free marks around 90% (of 520 marks) which scores to 468 marks. So, out of 1000 totals marks, he will get 708 marks. Thus for a student who is capable to score only 50% marks is given 70.80 %. Then why will that student take pains to study harder. Guardians feels happy when they see aggregate percentage but they don't know the reality.
Some tough call needs to be taken by faculty members by not giving free marks in sessional, internal, external, discipline and projects. Projects are purchased by students from shop, they do nothing in it, they know nothing about it, but marks given are very high.
So, it is the faculty members who is becoming sweet poison for the student' career. If internal marks are given in a proportion ratio to theory marks or PUT marks, then they will study harder and learn a lot more.
3. Students are the best advertiser of their own College/ Institute. Feedback should be taken from them in time to time:
For any new admission, the student or parent consult those students who have passed out or are studying in that institute. If the students are placed in any job, or happy with the institute, then they will automatically refer that student to their own institute.
In four year course, we should at least take 4 times feedback from each student about the faculty, management, and the institute. Let's say, we can't fulfill each and every student's requirement/problems. But at least we can sort out those problems which are being faced by many students.
The biggest advantage of taking feedback from each student is that, there develops a fear in every faculty and staff's minds. Suppose a teacher is not teaching good, or suppose he has skipped half unit. Now the individual students won't say anything, because of the fear of reduction of sessional marks. Moreover, students are more comfortable in giving feedback on paper, then orally. Also, there will be a competition among the teacher, to lead the race of best teacher, when marking be done on student's feedback. So, automatically, best efficiency can be generated from each staff members. Along with that, students will be be happy if they know, their problems are being heard by the management.
Students are highly irritated by non-teaching staffs, like account section, exam cell etc, when they are compelled to run here and there for getting their small work done. Suppose student needs to get a seal on their training letter, which is a simple task of 1 min, but they run from Admin to Account section to back to Admin to Exam cell, wheresoever they can probably get the college stamp. And it takes a whole day or more to get a seal on a training letter. Moreover, other examples can be getting marksheet, getting no dues finalised etc. The reason behind this is, each staff wants to show that they are the boss. If work of students gets done in few minutes, then their dignity might decrease. More the times, students wander around them, more will their personality increase. In simple words, private college staffs are somewhat trying to act like govt. sector staffs.
4. Collaborate institute with industries.
4. Collaborate institute with industries.
College needs to have trustworthy relations with 2-3 industries or companies in each branch. An engineer from that company or industry should be hired for 15 days or 1 month and teach all the aspects of engineering happening in that industry. And for the next 15 days or 1 month, the students should be allowed to work in that industry, for free or with a less stipend. But this thing can't take place in bulk. We need to select only 5-6 students of the batch. Faculty can't motivate the weakest student of the class, as they listen and forget the things. So, in order to motivate the weakest students, faculty should specially focus on best 5-6 students of the class in getting a job. The rest of the students will feel jealous and work harder to compete. Thus by focusing initially on 5-6 students, we can try bring forward all the students in industrial league.
For few students who wish to prepare for GATE or have deeper knowledge of the subjects, they should be provided with NPTEL Video lectures (lectures delivered by IIT's teachers). Faculty should make the student sit peacefully in lab, provide them PCs and ask them to go through video lectures. Studying needs a habit. If they start studying for a month, they will keep studying on their own later. 3-4 hrs given in a week, the students can learn a lot.
